MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday reminded the public that organ selling is a form of human trafficking.

DOH Spokesperson Asec. Albert Domingo said this is contrary to the advocacy on organ donation, which has been a means of saving lives.

"Organ selling is human trafficking. Ang pagbenta ng kidney ay pagbenta ng katawan… Kung meron po tayong voluntary donation, iyan po ang ating tinatanggap," he told reporters at the sidelines of a forum on National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Day.

(Organ selling is a form of human trafficking. Selling a kidney is selling a part of your body, and that is not good. If we have voluntary donations, then that is acceptable.)

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) this week raided a house in Bulacan where illegal donors who were paid up to P200,000 for their organs allegedly stayed.

Three caretakers were arrested and nine were rescued, of whom four already had their organs harvested.

Organ donation, such as of kidneys and livers, is nonetheless a significant help for patients, Domingo said.

However, it should go through two processes, namely medical screening and ethics clearance.

Domingo shared that the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) is investigating the raid, as one of its nurses was tagged in the illegal organ trade discovered by the NBI.

"So this will be an internal investigation by the NKTI...Inaantay po natin iyong resulta noon para, siyempre, due process. Malaman natin kung ano man ang pagkakamali kung meron, at ang karampatang parusa kung kinakailangan," he said.

(We are waiting for the results because due process is important. We need to find out if there were any mistakes and, if necessary, impose the appropriate penalties.)

The nurse tagged in the scheme works in the ambulatory unit which has nothing to do with transplants, said NKTI Executive Director Dr. Rose Marie Rosete-Liquete.

She said the nurse denied all the allegations.

The NKTI is a government-owned and controlled corporation hospital supervised by the DOH.
