Dela Rosa says 6 candidates possible in Duterte's Senate slate

Senator Ronald dela Rosa believes there could be as many as six candidates for senator who will run under the banner of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Dela Rosa said he was "pleasantly surprised" by Vice President Sara Duterte's announcement that her father and two brothers Rep. Paolo and Davao City Mayor Sebastian will be running for senator in the 2025 elections.

He said actor Philip Salvador can join the slate which would also include dela Rosa and Senator Christopher Lawrence Go, who is seeking a 2nd term in the Senate.

Dela Rosa said this could lead to a conventional campaign instead of a guerilla campaign like he earlier announced.

"Medyo nagulat nga ako, nagulat ako doon sa balita na yun but then again nagulat ako at the same time masaya ako,” he said.

Dela Rosa said Duterte will also attract supporters especially among local government units.

"Yes most likely dahil nga meron kahit papaano may mga LGUs pa rin may mga governor mga mayor na humahanga kay Pangulong Duterte at willing to support the group kung puounta sa area nila," Dela Rosa said.

He added that the former President is physically fit to run for and serve in the Senate.

"Medyo lumakas naman siya ngayon nung wala na siyang trabaho, hindi na siya presidente lumakas na siya kahit may edad na siya pero very sharp pa rin yung utak niya at maganda yung aura na yan maraming 80 years and above na senador noon noon noon pa kaya niya yan," Dela Rosa said.

He added that the former leader is also still politically formidable.

"Napakalakas pa rin, basahin mo yung ang survey survey napakataas sa kanila, at ikaw mismo magtanong sa ordinaryong tao palagi sinasabi ng tao bumababa ako sabi sana bumalik si Pangulong Duterte pagka president gusto namin patuloy niya yung ginagawa niya." Dela Rosa said.

OPPOSITION ROLE

Meanwhile, Dela Rosa claimed that the Liberal Party-led bloc will forfeit its opposition stance if it links up with the Marcos administration to challenge the Dutertes in the 2025 elections.

He said this will also make the Dutertes the de facto opposition bloc in the country.

"Kung mag-align sila sa Malacanang ano pang purpose bakit sila mag-join forces sa Malacanang, ‘di ba para hadlangan ang Duterte, pag ganoon hadlang ang Duterte obvious na opposition na ang Duterte niyan pag ganoon ang sitwasyon," he said.

"That is kung makipag-align ang Malacanang sa mga yellow sa mga pink ganoon talaga mangyari mag-align sila ibig sabihin wala nang opposition."

Liberal Party stalwart and former Senate President Franklin Drilon agreed.

"Precisely that's what I'm saying the lack of a political party system brings about all of this," Drilon told ABS-CBN in a separate interview.

Dela Rosa however sees no obstacle to such a unity.

"Everybody and anybody can form a unity ticket against Duterte. Walang prohibitions diyan, kung gusto nila diyan mag-usap sila sa Malakanyang at saka yung mga yellow or pink ba mag usap nila kung gusto nilang mag align di naman natin sila pwede pigilan kung gusto nila 'yan," he said.
