MANILA — The Philippine Army said Thursday the Salaknib exercise would bolster the military’s shift from internal security to territorial defense.

Salaknib, which means shield in Ilocano, is an annual Army-to-Army exercise geared towards strengthening the interoperability of Filipino and American troops, and enhancing their capabilities against external threats in a spectrum of military operations.

“Salaknib is in line with the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC),” Brigadier General Danilo Benavides, Philippine Army Exercises Control Group head, told reporters at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City.

The second phase of the Salaknib exercise began on May 11 and will run until June 10.

The exercise involves 1,695 Filipino soldiers and 1,644 American soldiers.

Benavides noted that the drills will provide opportunities for the troops to acquire essential skills, including familiarity with new combat technologies and weapon systems, and improved decision-making by key ground leaders.

“’Yung Salaknib part 2 involves two divisions: one from the US Army Pacific and one from the [Philippine Army] 7th Infantry Division. It is a brigade-to-brigade force-on-force exercise. Dati kasi we are engaged in the platoon level, company level. This time, we are employing two brigades—one each from the US Army and the Philippine Army," the official said.

"Mas malaki ang scale ng exercise na ito and they are being provided with the operational environment wherein key leaders will be stressed para magreact to certain scenarios,” he added.

The first phase of the Salaknib exercise, which was conducted from April 22 to May 10, focused on air assault and air mobile operations training, and jungle operations training.
