MANILA (UPDATE) — The Philippines has documented its first death due to e-cigarette or vape-associated lung injury (EVALI), health advocates announced during a forum coinciding World No Tobacco Day on Friday.

The case was published in April in the Respirology Case Reports journal of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology by Dr. Margarita Isabel Fernandez and other doctors of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila.

WHAT IS EVALI?

For the condition to be declared EVALI, conditions have to be met: the person should have been vaping for at least 90 days and no comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, metabolic conditions, and bacterial, viral, or fungal infection.
