MANILA — Sen. Risa Hontiveros on Monday said the Senate investigation into Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo was not "an attack on Filipinos of Chinese heritage."

Two Senate panels are holding a joint investigation into Guo's alleged links to a massive POGO site in her municipality, but the probe took a bizarre turn after reports surfaced that Guo "came out of nowhere" during the 2022 elections.

Hontiveros was among the first to float suspicions that Guo could be a Chinese spy or asset.

On Monday, the senator clarified that she was not attacking Filipinos of Chinese heritage.

"My own maternal great-grandmother was pure Chinese. The revelations about Mayor Alice Guo came out after evidence of her complicity in POGO-related crimes. At ang ibang ebidensya galing mismo sa kanyang mga salita," the senator explained.

During the second hearing on Guo last week, several senators grilled the controversial mayor on her childhood and parents to establish her ties to the Philippines.

Hontiveros reminded the public that "racism, xenophobia, and Sinophobia" are not acceptable.

"Sa gitna ng lahat ng ito, inuulit ko ang paalala ko na hindi kailanman magiging katanggap-tanggap ang racism, xenophobia at Sinophobia. Regardless of our heritage, all law-abiding citizens should not be the subject of hate and discrimination," she said.

Hontiveros said that the Guo probe was not a "witch hunt" but about "national security, criminal activities, accountability in public service, the rights and welfare of women and children, and the structural failure of our system to regulate POGO as a business model."

Guo earlier said she was not a Chinese spy or asset and that she is Filipino citizen.
