"Pinalawak ang grounds pero di naman binigyan ng daan ang PAO (Public Attorney's Office) na hawakan ang mga kasong tulad nito, so makikinabang na naman dito kung saka-sakali ay yung mga mayayaman na kayang magbayad ng abogado... Paano 'yung mahihirap nating kababayan?" Escudero said.

"Siyempre ibang usapan yung nagbubugbugan, ibang usapan yung mala impyerno na yung tahananan. Meron pong legal na pamamaraan. Ang tawag po doon annulment... Para po sa akin ang anulment dapat maging accessible to the poor, that's all I can say," Villanueva said in a speaking engagement.

The senator is the son of evangelist and Jesus Is Lord Church Worldwide founder Eddie Villanueva, who, as a party-list representative, opposed the measure at the House.
The Senate's version of the divorce law, Senate Bill 2443, was principally authored by Sen. Risa Hontiveros, Raffy Tulfo, Robinhood Padilla, Pia Cayetano, and Imee Marcos. It is pending on second reading before the Senate Plenary.

Escudero said the divorce bill will be part of his discussions with his colleagues on their legislative agenda for the upcoming 3rd regular session of the 19th Congress.
