MANILA — Personalities identified with the Liberal Party (LP) such as former senators Leila de Lima and Kiko Pangilinan remain “political giants” in the Philippines, a public administration expert said Tuesday as he assess their chances in next year's midterm polls.

“I think Liberal Party should continue to field candidates... Kung hindi naman diametrically opposed or kalaban ng kanilang mga prinsipyo, also come up with an alliance,” Tapia said.

The 2025 elections, according to Tapia, is also “critical” to the 2028 presidential polls, thus, the need to consolidate forces.

Tapia reiterated his point on the likelihood of an LP alliance with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.'s “Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas.” He believes this would not necessarily mean that the opposition camp would have to relinquish its role as “fiscalizers” — those who hold authority to account.

“A niche political party advocating for specific cause which is the youth, and maybe empowerment to the local government. Hindi nya puwedeng i-posisyon ang sarili nya as the new Liberal Party... kasi masyado pang maliit (na party),” Tapia said.

For Tapia, the 2025 elections will be “interesting,” not only because of the national positions at stake, but also because of potential drama at the local level.
