MANILA — The use of artificial intelligence in an interconnected CCTV system across the country could help authorities thwart street crimes and other illegal acts, the chief of the Philippine National Police said Wednesday.

PNP chief PGen. Rommel Francisco Marbil pointed out that there was no law mandating a nationwide centralized CCTV system, which he said could also help the police solve crimes.

Authorities have been using CCTV footage in their investigations and even use them as evidence in court when charging suspects.

"Sabi nga ni [Interior] Secretary [Benjamin] Abalos… let us come up with a law that will connect kasi wala pong law that will connect all the CCTVs around the Philippines," Marbil told TeleRadyo Serbisyo.

Marbil said other countries are already using a unified CCTV system.

"When the President spoke to me last time, sabi nga niya, 'Alam mo doon sa ibang countries especially in London they have so many CCTVs that they can easily use when we go out… parang makukuhanan ka ng 3,000 pictures just for a simple walk back to your home,'" Marbil said.

"Sabi nga niya kung magagamit natin ito sa ating bansa ngayon sigurado mga tao natin they will feel more secure," he said.
