MANILA -- A dog named Wally was rescued after being trapped inside a wall for nearly a month.

A video released by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) showed Wally's rescue, after the dog was abandoned by his owner when they moved houses from Dasmarinas, Cavite last February 2024.

According to PETA Senior Campaigner Jana Sevilla, Wally was trapped inside a wall while the house was being constructed and left to suffer for nearly a month, surviving only on water seeping from a drain hole inside the wall.

"Sabi ng mga kapitbahay halos isang buwan na nila naririnig yung tahol ng aso na yun," she said. "'Di nila mawari kung saan nanggagaling ang tahol."

Wally's ordeal came to an end when new tenants heard his howls coming from the wall and promptly reported it to barangay officials.

Barangay Luzviminda 1, led by Captain Jeffrey Galit, collaborated with PETA for assistance. The wall was demolished, leading to Wally's rescue.

The dog was severely emaciated and covered in wounds from his attempts to escape confinement.

"Tinibag nila itong pader na to at na rescue ang aso na punong-puno ng sugat sa paligid ng kanyang katawan at napaka payat na," said Sevilla.

PETA took Wally to a veterinarian for assessment, and is currently seeking a foster home for him through their Adopt-a-Pet program. Wally has since gained weight and is waiting adoption.

Meanwhile, Sevilla said PETA is considering filing a case against the owners for violating the Animal Welfare Act, especially if the maltreatment to Wally is deliberate.
