WASHINGTON — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday said Vice President Sara Duterte’s silence on China’s aggression in the West Philippine Sea was not “something to be concerned” about as “it is not the place” of his second in command to comment on such issues.

Duterte was recently criticized for staying mum on China’s illegal and dangerous maneuvers in the West Philippine Sea that injured several Filipinos and damaged fishing and coast guard vessels.

“I don’t think that is something to be concerned with,” Marcos Jr. told reporters.

“That’s not the role of the Vice President and the Secretary of Education to talk about China,” he said.

When asked if he and Duterte share the same position on China’s incursions in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, Marcos said: “I think we are all in line.”

“I’m very sure if Inday Sara has very serious misgivings, she will bring that to me,” he said.

“Kapag pinag-uusapan nga namin, ang sinasabi niya, ‘Basta ako, trabaho lang nang trabaho,’” he said.

“That’s a good policy,” he added.

The Vice President’s father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, forged closer ties with China during his term after the United States questioned his drug policy that was riddled with human rights issues.

Recently, the Duterte patriarch was accused of forging “secret deals” with China over the Philippines’ activities in the West Philippine Sea.
