President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said he is in favor of having Australia join the Association of the South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“Well, I cannot see why that would not be a good idea,” Marcos said in an interview in Melbourne where he attended the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit which commemorated the regional bloc’s 50 years of dialogue partnership with Australia.

The Philippine leader noted that Australia “has already been a very active part of ASEAN.”

“And for all intents and purposes, really, in all but name, they are already members of ASEAN. Yes, I think they would be very welcome to join ASEAN,” he said.
