MANILA — The Department of Health is reminding motorists to drive safely this Holy Week, or Semana Santa, break to avoid road crashes that could lead to injuries and deaths.

The health agency said people can avoid potentially deadly road crashes by adhering to the following measures.

• Vehicles should be regularly maintained and checked, especially before long travels
• The driver must avoid alcohol before and during driving and should get enough rest
• Do not use cell phone while driving
• Ensure hydration and take short breaks during long drives

According to the World Health Organization, road crashes are "a major yet often neglected public health issue." It noted that deaths from road crashes are increasing in the Philippines.

Road traffic deaths in the country rose by 39 percent to 11,096 in 2011 from 7,938 in 2011, according to the WHO, citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority.
"Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among Filipinos 15-29 years old, and a major killer among children," WHO said.
