MANILA — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on Friday reported an increase in the number of fire incidents in the country, with 3,044 recorded from January 1 to March 1, 2024 from the 2,424 in the same period last year.

BFP spokesperson Col. Annalee Atienza said this translated to 25.6 percent increase in the record.

"Majority po nito ay residential gaya ng nasabi natin at nangunguna po ditong cause ay smoking or lighted cigarettes; pangalawa po ang open flame from cooking – so, iyong mga nagluluto po natin diyan; pangatlo po ay electrical ignition," she said in a public briefing.

BFP is intensifying its public awareness programs this "Fire Prevention Month".

Since most cases happened in residential areas, BFP is strengthening its “Oplan Ligtas na Pamayanan” and the EDITH or Emergency Drill In The Home program.

"Sa ngayon po nandoon po tayo sa empowering iyong community dahil nga po ang nakikita natin kailangan po ay concerted efforts. Bayanihan po talaga," Atienza said.

The BFP, however, admitted limitations in terms of infrastructure, equipment and manpower.

Currently, there are 123 municipalities in the country that still do not have fire stations and fire trucks, Atienza noted.

"With this RA 11589 (BFP Modernization) – 10-year program po ito na nakalatag. Mag-uumpisa ngayong taon at we’re looking forward na mapunuan na po iyong kakulangan and madagdagan po ng makabago pang kagamitan including iyong atin pong mga helicopters and choppers," she said.

While the bureau leads the fire prevention programs, it reminds the local government units of its important role of championing efforts to prevent fires in their localities.

"Napakalaki po ng role ng ating local government units especially sa implementation po ng Fire Code dahil nga po sila ang ating partner sa pag-implement ng fire safety measures sa isang building. And also, out of the collection ng Fire Code fees, 20 percent po ay mapupunta sa kaban ng city or municipality intended for the fire safety development nitong ating local fire stations," Atienza said.
