MANILA - At least 44 percent of Filipinos believe their lives will get better in the next 12 months, according to a survey of the Social Weather Stations (SWS).

Another 44 percent said their lives would stay the same, while 5 percent said it would worsen. The rest did not give an answer.

This brings the net personal optimism score to +39, which is slightly down from +42 recorded in September last year.

The survey had 1,200 adult respondents and was done from December 8 to 11, 2023.

"Tinanong namin ang respondents, ano sa tingin nila ang mangyayari sa uri ng kanilang pamumuhay sa darating na 12 buwan, masasabi ba na ang inyong pamumuhay ay bubuti, kapareho lang, o sasama," said Leo Laroza, SWS Director for Communications and Information Technology.

SWS observed that respondents from Metro Manila registered higher optimism than those from Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

"Buti na lang tumaas yung sa Metro Manila, kundi mas malaki pa binaba nito," he said.

Laroza said inflation is among the biggest factors that affect the outlook of Filipinos towards the quality of their lives.

"By further analysis, nakita namin na ang pagbaba ng optimism ay nangyari talaga sa mga pamilya na nagsasabing sila ay mahirap o yung mga self-rated poor. Sila ang most affected sa last quarter of 2023," Laroza added.

"We're still getting the lasting effects of the high inflation rate, all the way to December," he said.

SWS said historically, Filipino optimists always outnumbered the pessimists.

"We are, as a nation, optimistic talaga tayo when looking at your own quality of life. That's what makes us resilient as a people, lagi tayo may pag-asa," he added.
