MANILA (2nd UPDATE) — Sen. Robin Padilla on Monday apologized to 2 offices of the Senate over his wife Mariel Padilla's IV drip session in his office last week that earned the ire of social media users and a lawmaker.

Padilla sent letters addressed to Dr. Renato Sison, director of the Senate's Medical and Dental Bureau; and Roberto Ancan, the Senate sergeant-at-arms.

"I would never think of violating the Senate's security protocols, much less disrespecting our institution... I wish to emphasize that my wife had no intention of disregarding the rules and regulations of the Senate Medical Bureau," the newbie senator said.

"Rest assured this will not happen again," Padilla stressed.

Padilla also extended his apology to Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri and Sen. Nancy Binay, chairperson of the Senate ethics panel, who took offense at Mariel's post.

"Nais ko pong ipahatid ang aking sinserong paghingi ng paumanhin kung ito ay nagdulot ng kagambalaan sa liderato ng Senado, sa ating mga iginagalang na kasamahan, at sa lahat ng bumubuo ng institusyon," Padilla said in his letter to Zubiri.

(I want to offer my most sincere apologies if this has inconvenienced the Senate leadership, our respected colleagues, and all who are part of our institution.)

He said he would make sure to follow the rules of the Senate from now on.

In a chance interview Monday, Padilla urged critics to let the issue go and instead focus on more pressing concerns of country.

On Sunday, Mariel apologized to the public and to the Senate over the issue, explaining that she had booked an appointment at home but the Senate session took longer than expected.

"My intent was just to inspire others that even amidst various activities or wherever they are, they can still prioritize their health... I want to extend my sincerest apologies to all concerned, including the members and staff of the Senate and the public,” she said.

On TeleRadyo Serbisyo on Saturday, Binay said she was bothered by Mariel's actions inside the Senate premises.

She stressed that the Senate would likely not have been able to respond to a potential medical emergency had something gone wrong.

"I don't think may capability yung Senado, dahil hindi nga kami health facility (we are not a health facility)," Binay said.

Binay said it is up to the DOH to say if Mariel has committed a violation for using and openly endorsing the use of glutathione, which the Food and Drug Administration has not authorized as a skin whitener.

After the incident, Binay admitted that she is considering the need to list down the "do's and don'ts" at the Senate.
