MANILA — Philippine Coast Guard personnel in Northern Samar rescued 71 passengers from a roll on/roll off ferry that ran aground on Capul Island on Sunday.

According to a PCG release, MV Reina Hosanna was sailing for Matnog, Sorsogon from Allen in Northern Samar when it experienced engine failure that left it dead in the water on Sunday night.

Batangas-headquartered operator Marina Ferries sent MV Reina Immaculada to tow MV Reina Hosanna to safety, but, the PCG said, the mooring line was severed in the attempt.

The coast guard as well as local disaster responders managed to rescue the 71 passengers.
