Philippine-born Jessica Caloza held a giant lead on Wednesday in her race to become the first Filipina to be elected to the California state assembly.

She had over 72,000 votes on the evening of Nov. 6, more than double of her opponent Frank Carillo's over 35,000 votes.

"I feel really good but we have to make sure every vote is counted," she said. "So, while we feel good, [it] is about celebrating our progress so far this is not a victory celebration by any means, this is more of a thank you."

Caloza was joined by friends, family, supporters, and elected officials on Tuesday night as she celebrated her success at the polls.

It has been three years since the state assembly had a Filipino in it. Now with Caloza’s potential win, she not only brings a Filipino voice back to the assembly but would also be a voice for one of the state’s largest Filipino concentration.
