Manila and Washington “will remain steadfast friends and ironclad allies” regardless of who wins the White House race, US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson said on Wednesday as polls gradually closed around the United States.

The relationship between Philippines and the US has “stood the test of time for decades,” Carlson told reporters on the sidelines of an elections live viewing party in Manila.

“Every 4 years, there are nuances that will change in every administration but the strength of the US-Philippine relations and the importance of the Indo-Pacific to the American people will remain,” she said. “I am extremely confident that US-Philippine relations will remain steadfast friends and ironclad allies as well as partners in prosperity no matter who wins in the elections of the United States today.”

The Philippines is still expected to get support from its decades-old treaty ally whether Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump wins the elections, the ambassador said.

“It’s the Congress that holds the purse strings in terms of financing all of our operations overseas, whether it is civilian or military,” Carlson said.

“When you look at the foreign military financing and the support for the US-Philippine military relationship, it is as many Republicans as Democrats who are enthusiastically supporting the US-Philippine alliance,” she said.

“That goes across the board, not just in our military relationship, but we are also very strong partners in prosperity,” she said.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. flew to the US at least 3 times in 2 years as he forged closer ties with Washington during the administration of President Joe Biden, a democrat.

Marcos and Harris met at least 5 times between 2022 and 2023 to reaffirm the alliance between Manila and Washington amid China’s growing aggression in the South China Sea.

During those meetings, the Philippines and US leaders “emphasized their shared intent to grow and modernize” their military alliance and cooperation in other sectors, with Marcos Jr. underscoring that the presence of the United States was "crucial to regional peace.”

In April, Biden, Marcos and then-Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida entered a trilateral partnership to open the “Luzon Corridor” of investments, to accelerate the development of ports, rail, clean energy, semiconductors, supply chains, and other forms of connectivity in the Philippines’ largest island.

This economic push is expected to continue even if the US elects a Republican leader, Carlson said.

“Those American companies, they are Republicans and Democrats and they vote all ways and they are enthusiastic about the US-Philippines relationship as partners in prosperity as well,” she said.

Carlson, who has “witnessed transition from Republican to Democrat to Republican and back and forth” in her 39 years of working in the US State Department, underscored that the US would remain a steadfast ally not just of the Philippines, but also of other Indo-Pacific states.

“Remember when you think about the security situation here in the Indo-Pacific, it was under the Trump administration that Sec. Pompeo came out and lent credence and support to the arbitral ruling that favored the Philippines,” she said.

“I am highly confident that whoever wins the presidential elections, US-Philippine relations are on very strong footing,” she said.

The 2024 US Presidential Elections has been described as “divisive” as Harris and Trump are expected to figure in a tight race.
