MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday said it will not hold lavish holiday gatherings and will instead spend the money to assist those affected by recent typhoons.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has encouraged government agencies to forgo extravagant Christmas parties “in solidarity with the millions of our countrymen who continue to grieve over the loss of lives, homes, and livelihoods caused by the six typhoons that struck us in less than a month,” according to Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.

Police Maj. Gen. Roderick Augustus Alba, director of the PNP Directorate for Police Community Relations, said the PNP headquarters has not yet received official communications from Malacañang or the Department of the Interior and Local Government on the matter.

“We will be recommending to the Chief, PNP not to have a lavish... lavish preparation. We [will ]spend it more doon sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo,” he said, adding holiday parties are not among the PNP's priorities anyway.

Alba said regional directors and National Support Unit directors would have the discretion to determine what qualifies as “lavish.”

Alba noted that nearly 3,000 police personnel, mostly from the Bicol region, have been affected by the recent Super Typhoon Pepito, which caused damage to parts of Luzon.

These personnel will receive financial assistance and will be granted vacation leave.

“May mga nasirang bahay at may na-injure at kasama rin ‘yong mga iba’t ibang police stations, mga sasakyan namin ay kasama sa na-damage sa mga sunod-sunod na typhoons,” Alba said.

(Some homes were destroyed, and there were injuries. Various police stations and vehicles were also damaged due to the series of typhoons.)
