MANILA (2nd UPDATE) — Pagasa warned of a “potentially dangerous and life-threatening” situation in Aurora province, which is under Tropical Cylone Wind Signal No. 5, as Super Typhoon Pepito maintained strength ahead of projected landfall.

According to the state weather bureau’s 2 p.m. bulletin, Pepito was over the coastal waters of Baler, Aurora at 1 p.m.

Strong to typhoon-force winds are expected up to 300 kilometers from the Pepito’s center.

The super typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 230 kph.

Pepito is moving northwest at 20 kph

Wind Signal No. 5 has been raised over the central portion of Aurora — Dipaculao, Baler, Dinalungan, Maria Aurora, Casiguran and San Luis — and the southern portion of Quirino as well as the southern portion of Nueva Vizcaya.

More areas in Northern Luzon have been placed under Wind Signal No. 4.

Super Typhoon Pepito could make landfall over Aurora this Sunday afternoon and then cross northern Central Luzon and southern Northern Luzon.

It will cross the southern part of Northern Luzon before emerging over the West Philippine Sea late Sunday or early Monday.

Very strong winds, torrential rains, and storm surge as Pepito crosses Luzon may cause widespread and serious damage, flooding, and landslides in many parts, especially along the immediate path of the typhoon.

It will be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday.
