MANILA — A total of 2.1 million household electricity connections across 12 regions were affected by the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, with damages to electrical infrastructure pegged at an initial P50 million, the National Electrification Administration (NEA) reported Tuesday.

The NEA and electric cooperatives are currently working to restore power in the remaining 500,000 houses that still do not have electricity, according to NEA Administrator Antonio Almeda.

He noted that the areas covered by CASURECO III in Iriga, Camarines Sur have the lowest energization rate with only 54 percent of areas energized, with manual shutdown being implemented in the flooded areas.

“As we speak right now, in the areas of Pangasinan – 168 out of the 192 barangays were already energized. In Batangas in BATELEC I, 76.2 percent of the connections were energized also. In CASURECO II in the areas of Naga, 76 percent of the household connections were energized although 60 percent of Naga, Niña, are—60 percent only in Naga are energized; 7 barangays are still flooded and only large vehicles are allowed to pass,” Almeda said in a televised briefing.

“In Albay, 62 percent of the household connections were already energized and we expect that the Task Force Kapatiran, meaning to say the augmentation implemented by the other coops will help fast track the full restoration,” the official continued.

“In Catanduanes, in the areas of FICELCO, 92 percent are already energized; target completion rate is on October 30. In Ilocos Norte, INEC, 100 percent energization was already achieved. So far, iyon Niña, ang aming datos na maishi-share sa inyo.”

The NEA official meanwhile assured that critical areas including hospitals and evacuation centers are energized, including the Matnog and Allen Ports to ensure that the transport of goods will be rendered accordingly.

“In areas of Albay, we expect that we have about 40 teams already sent to the areas of Albay to augment the restoration. Of course, safety will be an issue here not unless and until mawala ang mga tubig to make sure na safe ang pagri-restore ng electricity – iyon lang ang magiging balakid sa atin ano. But rest assured that all equipment, all distribution assets that will be used are already on standby,” Almeda said.

The official also assured that preparations are in place to address the possible impact of typhoon Leon especially in the Batanes island.
