Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/FileMANILA -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) will deploy about 18,000 of its personnel to secure transportation hubs, thoroughfares, and cemeteries for Undas, an official said Monday.

PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said the police already has a "security template" for recurring events, including Undas, where people are expected to do an exodus and gather in cemeteries.

Fajardo said police regional directors were given the authority to adjust their alert level if necessary to maintain security in their respective areas.

"Nasa 18,802 po 'yong ating ide-deploy po. At kasama na po sa ating ide-deploy po diyan 'yong mga ilalagay po natin sa mga police assistance desk sa ating mga memorial parks, at sa mga sementeryo, at pati na rin po sa mga transport terminals to make sure po na maalalayan po natin 'yong mga kababayan natin na ine-expect po na magbabiyahe," Fajardo told reporters in a media briefing.

Meanwhile, Fajardo said there would be different augmentations in typhoon-hit areas where reserved forces would be mobilized to help police personnel, some of whom were still busy as the recovery and relief efforts are ongoing.

Fajardo also urged the public to remain vigilant and practice caution when leaving the house, such as locking the doors and windows, using alarm systems and security cameras as much as possible, and not posting itinerary, personal details, and other "at the moment" activities online.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) last week said that it is in coordination with the PNP and the Highway Patrol Group to prepare for the commemoration of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.

Local government units have been advised to submit traffic plans — including the schedule of major road closures — ahead of time to prevent traffic congestion, especially on roads leading to cemeteries, according to MMDA Traffic Enforcement Group Chief Atty. Victor Nunez.

A total of 1,257 MMDA personnel will be deployed to manage the increased number of departing passengers.

Airlines have also geared up for the expected influx of passengers, with Cebu Pacific projecting nearly one million passengers flying with 5J for the Undas peak travel period. -- with reports from Pia Gutierrez, Johnson Manabat and Benise Balaoing, ABS-CBN News
