MANILA (UPDATED)— Intense rains on Wednesday were forecast to persist in Bicol provinces already turned into lakes by record-shattering rainfall brought by deadly Tropical Storm Kristine, which could hamper the delivery of aid and efforts to save trapped residents awaiting rescue since Tuesday night.

The state weather bureau's heavy rainfall prediction issued Wednesday said heavy to torrential rains of up to 200 mm could still hit Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, and Sorsogon.

Heavy to torrential rains will also batter Northern Luzon, Aurora, and Quezon on Wednesday, while moderate to heavy rains will be experienced in Metro Manila and the rest of mainland Luzon, northern Mimaropa, and Northern Samar.

Serious flooding and landslides are expected in many areas with heavy rainfall warnings, prompting PAGASA to advise the public and disaster offices to take all necessary measures to protect life and property.

LAHAR FLOW

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Wednesday that heavy rains from Tropical Storm Kristine could trigger potentially hazardous lahar flows in at least five areas in Bicol.

The towns of Camalig, Guinobatan, Daraga, and Sto. Domingo, as well as Legazpi City, could see lahar flows, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said, adding that other deposits from previous eruptions could also be "mobilized," similar to what happened in 2020.

"Maaaring tangayin ng lahar ang mga gusali, bahay at mga pananim… Puwede ding kumitil ito ng buhay like what happened in 2006 during Typhoon Reming, around 1,500 people died," he said.

Philvolcs also deployed teams to check river channels where lahar could flow, he said.

"Kung tuloy-tuloy ang pag-ulan, may panganib ng lahar kung sila ay naninirahan malapit sa mga ilog sa dalislis ng Bulkang Mayon," he said.

Bacolcol advised residents to stay vigilant as Tropical Storm Kristine continues to unleash heavy rains.

WIND SIGNALS

Metro Manila, Northern and Central Luzon, and most of Bicol and Calabarzon are now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2.

Wind Signal No. 1, meanwhile, is in effect over the rest of mainland Luzon, Batanes, Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Calamian Islands, Masbate, Western Visayas, northern Negros, northern and central Cebu, Bohol, Eastern Visayas, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte.

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Tropical Storm Kristine was located 200 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora, with winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 105 kph. It is moving north northwestward at 30 kph.

Kristine is forecast to make landfall over Isabela on Wednesday evening as a severe tropical storm.
