(UPDATED) Tropical Depression Kristine maintained its strength Monday night while it continues to move west over the Philippine Sea.

At 10 p.m., Kristine was located 480 km east of Catarman, Norther Samar, with maximum winds of 55 kph and gusts up to 70 kph.

It is moving westward at 25 kph. Strong winds from the disturbance reach up to 800 km from its center.

Tropical Wind Signal No. 1 was hoisted over the following areas:

  • •Southern portion of Nueva Vizcaya (Alfonso Castaneda)

Signal number 1 entails strong winds over an area due to the tropical cyclone with local winds said to be slightly stronger or enhanced in coast areas and uplands.

Those under the signal warning may experience minimal to minor impacts from the wind.


PAGASA forecast track of tropical cyclone Kristine

The weather disturbance will move northwestward until Wednesday evening before turning west northwestward to westward in the next couple of days.

It may make landfall over northern Luzon on Thursday morning and may exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Friday night.
Kristine is also forecast to intensify into a tropical storm in the next 12 hours.

It may reach severe tropical storm category on Wednesday, and may make landfall over northern Luzon as a severe tropical storm. It may then reach typhoon category on Friday as it emerges over the West Philippine Sea.

State weather bureau PAGASA said many parts of the country can expect to feel the effects of Kristine especially as it moves towards the landmass.

From Monday evening through Tuesday evening, the rainfall forecast will be:

•Heavy to intense rains over Northern Samar, Catanduanes, and Camarines provinces;
•Moderate to heavy rains in Romblon, Marinduque, Quezon, and the rest of Bicol and Eastern Visayas

Residents of Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas are advised to prepare and take necessary measures against expected widespread and serious flooding and landslides.  - with reports from Ariel Rojas and Raphael Bosano, ABS-CBN News
