MANILA -- A low pressure area (LPA) is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone when it enters the Philippine area of responsibility late Sunday or early Monday.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the cyclone will be named Kristine when it enters PAR.

PAGASA said Kristine is expected to enhance the northeasterly winds over Northern Luzon beginning on Tuesday.

"Kristine is seen to make landfall as a Typhoon either over (1) mainland Cagayan Valley as early as Thursday and cross the West Philippine Sea, or (2) Batanes-Babuyan area by Saturday and then hit Taiwan. The projected path will be clearer in the coming days," the state weather bureau said.

The extension of Kristine will bring scattered rains especially over Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao beginning Monday through Saturday.

"The rainband of Kristine will drench Eastern Visayas and Bicol Tuesday to midday Wednesday and batter the rest of Luzon with strong winds and heavy rains afterwards through Saturday, especially Northern Luzon where life-threatening conditions may be experienced," said PAGASA.

"Flooding and landslides are expected."

Meanwhile, Metro Manila will experience sunny weather on Monday. It will be mostly cloudy on Tuesday while Wednesday through Saturday will see scattered rains with occasions of heavy downpour.

The weather conditions may start improving on Sunday.
