MANILA (UPDATE) - Super Typhoon Julian has started to recurve outside of the Philippine area of responsibility.

In its 11 p.m. weather bulletin Tuesday, PAGASA said Julian was last located 270 kilometers west northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers near the center, with gusts of up to 230 kph.

It is currently moving north northwestward slowly, and is expected to recurve towards the sea southwest of Taiwan until Wednesday morning.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is still hoisted over the following areas:

-- Babuyan Islands

-- Mainland Cagayan

-- Apayao

-- Kalinga

-- Abra

-- Mountain Province

-- Ilocos Norte

-- Ilocos Sur

Julian, while currently outside PAR, is expected to reenter PAR by Wednesday, before finally exiting on Thursday.

According to PAGASA, Julian is entering a period of gradual weakening, which is expected to continue through the forecast period. It is also expected to weaken further as it makes landfall over the mountainous terrain of Taiwan, and may be downgraded to typhoon category within 12 hours.

Moderate to heavy rains are expected over Batanes and Babuyan Islands until Wednesday.
