MANILA - Work in all courts in the country's capital, including the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, will be suspended on Tuesday in time for the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the high tribunal said Monday.

The suspension of work in Manila comes after the local government suspended government work and classes to ensure public order and safety of students and workers amid preparations for Xi's visit, the Supreme Court's public information office said, citing Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio.

Xi will be in the Philippines on Tuesday and Wednesday for a state visit, the first of a Chinese president in 13 years.

President Rodrigo Duterte first invited his counterpart to visit the Philippines during his state visit to China in October 2016, which the Chinese leader “accepted with pleasure.”

The chief executive renewed his invitation to Xi on the sidelines of the APEC leaders’ meeting in Lima, Peru last November 2016. His visit was announced while Duterte was in China's southern Hainan province for the Boao Forum for Asia last April.

Xi was last in Manila for the APEC leaders' meeting in November 2015, while a United Nations-backed tribunal was yet to decide on the Philippines' arbitration case against China for maritime rights over the West Philippine Sea.
