Initial agricultural damage caused by super typhoon "Lawin" (international name: Haima) has been pegged at P26 million in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) alone, disaster officials said Friday morning.

The strongest storm to hit the country this year has ravaged rice and corn fields, as well as other high-value crop plantations in Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Mountain Province as it barreled through Northern Luzon Thursday.

Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba earlier said 50,000 to 60,000 hectares of rice fields have been damaged by "Lawin" in Cagayan.

"Damage reports from other affected provinces have yet to be made as some areas remain isolated and communication signals are still down," National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson Mina Marasigan said.

"Disaster officials are still conducting an aerial survey to assess the extent of the damage brought by 'Lawin', especially in Cagayan," she added.

At least 10,606 families are still staying in evacuation centers as 65 barangays in Pangasinan, Pampanga, Cagayan, and Isabela are still flooded, Marasigan said.

"Water is still being released from the San Roque and Magat dams so communities near the Cagayan and Agno rivers are still affected by flooding," she said.

A plane carrying relief goods took off from Mactan at 9 a.m. to replenish supplies in Cagayan, she said.

Meantime, the government is looking to restore power lines in the Ilocos, Cagayan, Calabarzon and Cordillera regions by Friday evening.
