BOHOL - Church bells and sirens were rung simultaneously at exactly 8:12 a.m. for 33 seconds in commemoration of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Bohol on October 15, 2013.

Based on the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) records, at least 201 died in Bohol, the province hit hardest by the earthquake, while 13 others were from Cebu and Siquijor.

At least 742 were likewise wounded while the amount of damage to bridges, streets, schools, hospitals and other buildings in the Visayas reached P2.2 billion.

Three years since then, the local government claims the province has almost recovered.

"Bohol has recovered 95 percent since the deadly quake," Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto said.

More than P5 billion was allotted by the Aquino administration for the rehabilitation of the province following the massive earthquake.

But Chatto said some areas haven't been fixed due to the lapses and delays of some government agencies in delivering their rehabilitation efforts.

Bohol residents had earlier urged President Rodrigo Duterte to hasten the road rehabilitation and repair of other structures, including the water systems, that were damaged by the quake.

Despite the remaining damage, however, tourism had improved in the past three years. Tourist arrivals were pegged at 35.74 percent in 2015, the highest since the quake devastated the province, Chatto said.

This was also why Bishop Leonardo Medroso of the Diocese of Tagbilaran reminded Boholanos to have a faith that never wavers and to have a continued spirit of gratefulness despite calamities.
