BAGUIO CITY—The city government announced that it is relocating its night market from the 500-meter-long Harrison Road to Burnham Lake Drive, which is adjacent to the original site, to avoid traffic congestion.

Harrison Road, one of the city’s main streets, is often closed to traffic to give way to the market.

Earlier, the Department of Public Works and Highways alerted local authorities, saying that Harrison Road is a national road and should not be closed for such a purpose.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said his office once considered relocating the market to the concrete portion of the Baguio Athletic Bowl, but found that it couldn’t accommodate some 1,044 vendors at the market.

According to Magalong, based on assessment by city engineering office and the city health services office among other departments, the Burnham Lake Drive was the most sensible relocation site.

But he issued a strict no-cooking policy and recommended proper zoning to prevent confusion among visitors.
