MANILA (UPDATED/CORRECTED) - President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he believes in a "universal mind" as he quoted a Bible verse to explain his stand on the West Philippine Sea.

Duterte, who in past speeches questioned the existence of God, the creation story in the Bible, and other Church doctrines, said he believes in a "universal mind".

"They say I do not believe in God. Who says? I am a believer of a universal mind there. I do not believe a god so perfect would create hell for his creation. What kind of God is he? He is not my god," he said.

He also quoted Ecclesiastes 3 as he defended his position to stand up against China in "due time."

"There's a time for everything. A time to negotiate and a time to quarrel. With your enemy, with your political opponents, with your wife. That is why some lives are... and a time to antagonize, and a time to make peace, and a time to go to war, and a time to live, and a time to die. That's Ecclesiastes 3," Duterte said.

Duterte has said he is a deeply religious person, with the Bible as his guide in life.
