MANILA - The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Thursday filed charges against resort executives and local government officials in connection with environmental woes hounding Boracay island.

This after the NBI found that said resorts were built within the island's forestlands.

Some of the resorts also allegedly expanded their operations illegally and encroached further into forestlands. Other resorts meanwhile occupied wetlands, destroying the ecosystem.

Executives of several resorts in the top tourist spot were recommended charged for violation of the Revised Forestry Code, the Bureau of Fisheries Code, the anti-graft law, and the local government code.

These include corporate officers of Correos Internacionale, Boracay Island West Cove Management Philippines, Denichi Boracay Corporation, Seven Seas Boracay Properties, and Boracay Tanawin Properties.

Charges were also recommended against Malay, Aklan Mayor Ceciron Cahilig, former Mayor John Yap, and several other former and incumbent local government officials.

Boracay island was closed to tourists on April 26 upon orders of President Rodrigo Duterte. Government is undertaking unprecedented rehabilitation on the island to address its sewage woes and zoning violations of commercial establishments, among others.

The island is set to re-open in October this year, the government said.
