LAOAG, Ilocos Norte - (UPDATED) Laoag City Vice Mayor Michael Fariñas was killed in a car crash here, Wednesday.
Fariñas was driving his Mercedes Benz when it hit a concrete barrier in the city's curving bypass road and went straight into a rice field, said Laoag police chief Dominic Guerrero.

The vice mayor, nephew of House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, the police official told radio DZMM.
A policeman, who was with the vice mayor during the accident, is still under observation by doctors, Guerrero said.

Investigators, he said, are looking into reports that Fariñas was not wearing his seat belt during the accident.
