MANILA - Malacañang on Wednesday paid tribute to 4 government troops who lost their lives in a gun battle with Abu Sayyaf fighters in Bohol province, one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

"One officer, two soldiers, and a policeman paid the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duty to serve and protect our people. They are true heroes," Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.

"We salute their gallantry as we also assure their families that they will be provided all the necessary assistance from the government."

State forces on Tuesday exchanged gunfire with an Abu Sayyaf unit led by Abu Rami in Inabanga town, far from the terrorists’ jungle bases in Mindanao.

The encounter claimed the lives of 2nd Lieutenant Espelito Saldua, Jr., Corporal Meljun Cajaban, Sergeant John Dexter Duero and PO2 Rey Anthony Nazareno.

Six terrorists, including Rami, were also killed in the hours-long clash.

Abella commended the success of security forces in thwarting the "evil plans of some armed lawless elements to sow fear and terror in the province of Bohol."

He also lauded the vigilance of Inabanga residents, which led to the rapid deployment of state forces in the area.

At the same time, President Rodrigo Duterte's spokesperson also sought to assure the public that the peace and order situation in Bohol remains under control.

"The public should have no cause for alarm as the situation is contained and our security forces are in control. The government is exerting all efforts to maintain peace and order," Abella said.

The public, he added, must keep calm but vigilant, and report any possible threat to authorities.
