MANILA - Pope Francis has chosen a new auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan.

The Vatican announced on Monday that the pontiff has appointed Rev. Fr. Fidelis Layog as the new auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese.

"The Holy Father has appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan (Philippines) Rev. Fidelis B. Layog, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, until now Pastor of Our Lady of Purification parish , assigning him the titular episcopal see Tarasio," the announcement said.

As the new auxiliary bishop, Layog will assist Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas in running the archdiocese. The former auxiliary bishop, Msgr. Jose Elmer Mangalinao, was transferred by the pope in 2018 as the new bishop of the Diocese of Bayombong in Nueva Vizcaya.
As the new auxiliary bishop, Layog will assist Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas in running the archdiocese. The former auxiliary bishop, Msgr. Jose Elmer Mangalinao, was transferred by the pope in 2018 as the new bishop of the Diocese of Bayombong in Nueva Vizcaya.

Layog is a native of Dagupan. He studied philosophy at Mary Help of Christians College Seminary and theology at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology in Vigan City.
