CEBU CITY—(UPDATED) A former Cebu City assistant prosecutor was shot dead by an unidentified gunman along Escario St. in this city Thursday night, police said.

Mary Ann Castro was driving a Nissan Juke when she was ambushed by a man riding a motorcycle shortly before 10 p.m.

According to the Fuente Police Station, Castro was on her way home to Talisay City when the incident happened. She bore a gunshot wound in her neck.

A witness told ABS-CBN News he heard at least 5 gunshots. The assailant who wore a balaclava immediately fled the scene.

Castro's family arrived at the crime scene past 11 p.m. and have yet to issue a statement.

In December 2017, Castro was suspended for 90 days by the Department of Justice (DOJ) over complaints filed by the family of her former husband, Leodegreco “Greco” Sanchez.

Police alleged that Castro also had a past relationship with slain police officer SPO2 Adonis Dumpit.

Dumpit, a former close-in bodyguard of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, was killed by authorities in Tagbilaran City, Bohol on June 27, 2018. — With a report from Donna Lavares, ABS-CBN News
