President Rodrigo Duterte

MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday yet again issued a stern warning to drug lords jailed in the national penitentiary that he would be harsh and would hunt them down until they are all eliminated.

"There is always a time for you to make money and make a mockery out of our laws. There is always a time for you to be in control even if you are inside the prison. But there is always a time to rest and to die," Duterte said.

Duterte, who formally assumed office at noon yesterday, was speaking at the change of command rites of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) at Camp Aguinaldo.

In his speech, the 71-year-old veteran politician said he has had enough of the insults by convicted drug lords who are able to continue their illegal operations and live luxurious lives even while inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

He also lambasted prison officials who tolerate illegal drug trade in the facility.

"Saan ka nakakita dito ng gobyerno na ang trafficking ng drugs is being controlled inside the Bilibid prison? Sa atin lang. At parang sampal yan ng ilang beses, and how it came about into being is really, well, a neglect," he said.

"How can it happen na kung mag-inspection ka sa Bilibid you have to ask permission from the idiots inside. Hay naku!"

Duterte, whose presidential campaign was anchored on the fight against drugs, criminality and corruption, told drug lords that their days -- or hours -- are already numbered.

"I'm warning them there. They have their TVs there inside... Magbilang kayo ng araw," he said.

"Magbilang kayo ng oras, ayoko ng araw," he then quipped, to the applause of the audience.

The longtime mayor of Davao City, who has been tagged in various cases of extrajudicial killings, meanwhile again expressed no fear of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).

"I would be harsh, not cruel, but I would be harsh. Wala akong tolerance sa droga, zero," he said, adding that he will call in the AFP to help fight drugs in the country.

"We will eliminate the drug lords once and for all. We have to stop this practice sa Bilibid. Bitawan na niyo yan o kainin na niyo ngayon ang supply niyo," he added.

"If you destroy my country, I will kill you. If you destroy our children, I will kill you. If I am asked by anybody including the [CHR], I do not know you."
