Embrace the natural serenity and tranquility that Raffi’s Way offers, a place where you can truly relax.

Within the serene landscape of Tagaytay is a one-of-a-kind villa that guests surely won’t forget—Raffi's Way. This much-talked-about accommodation offers more than just a vacation home; it is an architectural gem, steeped in history, natural beauty, and familial love. Built in 1985 by the late Raffi Zulueta and designed by the iconic Budji Layug, this villa isn’t just a house – it's a portal to another time and place. Having visited the ironically semi-minimalist yet opulent villa, Raffi's Way promises an unforgettable experience that transports its guests to a realm of beauty, peace, and nostalgia.

Carved into the mountain, the house seamlessly integrates with its natural environment. The villa’s design is a tribute to its natural surroundings and the vision of its creators. At its core, using stone serves both a practical and aesthetic purpose. “Stone was selected for its durability and ability to keep the house cool during the hot seasons,” says owner Nino Zulueta, adding that the materials were chosen with both longevity and comfort in mind. The house is literally carved into the mountain, creating a seamless integration with the earthy and natural environment. As I approached the entry, I walked through a dramatic tunnel that felt almost cave-like, only to be greeted and wowed by the expansive living room, where 30-foot ceilings, a sunroof, and large glass windows invite the outside in.

The entry is a dramatic tunnel that feels almost cave-like.The thoughtful use of piedra China blocks, from the staircase steps to the flooring, adds a layer of texture that balances beauty with function. The dining room's materials and solid narra wood evoke the Filipino craftsmanship's timeless elegance and resilience. The villa is more than just a place to stay; it’s a testament to the artistry and history of its design, preserved exactly as it was when first created.

Raffy’s Way may be up for rent, but the view from inside this home is priceless

The Magic of Panoramic

One of the villa's most striking features is its panoramic view of Taal Lake, which seems to stretch endlessly into the horizon. The positioning of the home was no accident; the landscape and the terrain dictated every angle, creating a fluid relationship between the villa and its surroundings. “The house was designed to blend with the environment,” Nino explains. "It’s carved into the landscape so that every room offers a unique view of the lake and volcano." Whether enjoying a quiet evening on the private balcony of the master bedroom or sipping wine by the pool under the stars, the villa's setting offers the ultimate escape. Rain or shine, the ambience inside and the surrounding scenery can inspire every guest to ponder, reminisce, or simply utter a prayer of gratitude.

The master bedroom is spacious yet cosy, without compromising Taal Lake’s breathtaking views. The property is also home to 40-year-old Baguio pine trees, planted by the owner’s grandfather, Rafael Zulueta da Costa, a poet famous for national works like “The Molave”. These trees add not just to the natural beauty but also to the sense of continuity and heritage that the villa embodies.

The Heart of the Home

While Raffi's Way is undeniably rich in history and architectural grandeur, its true essence lies in its design for comfort. "The house was designed to be lived in, not just admired," says Nino. The furnishings are cozy, inviting, and meant to be enjoyed in the spirit of family and togetherness. The villa has hosted countless celebrations, from intimate weddings and pre-nuptial shoots to celebrity gatherings and film shoots. However, its primary appeal remains its ability to provide a tranquil, luxurious escape for families seeking a relaxing break close to Manila (90 minutes to be exact). They make it easy, too. From comforting beddings to complete kitchen amenities to the generous bath toiletries, everything is provided for a worry-free staycation.

The property evokes a different mood at night.

One of the home's most cherished features is its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia while still feeling relevant today. The 1980s charm is evident throughout—from the spacious living room with its dramatic ceiling to the cozy, lived-in furniture that adds warmth to the atmosphere. The stone walls and large windows ensure that the beauty of Tagaytay’s climate and landscape is always in sight, creating an immersive, calming environment for every guest. Meandering around, my imagination was tickled as I pictured how guests and families from decades ago interacted in and with this house.

A Personal Retreat

Raffi's Way offers the perfect setting for those who want to reconnect with nature and one another. Whether enjoying the 360-degree views from the roof deck or unwinding in the garden, each corner of the villa invites guests to bask in the quiet and beauty of Tagaytay. If you find yourself lounging in the living room, you’ll likely relax as the daylight gently touches your face. Above, a round opening in the ceiling lets the sunshine peek through, adding a joyfully tranquil element to the space. Through the expansive windows, the sky transforms into a colorful light show unfolding before you. A butterfly might flutter past, and a cicada hum fills the air, as nature breathes around you. In these quiet moments, time stretches, offering a peaceful pause in the day.

“We want our guests to feel transported to another time and place,” Nino shares. “A place where they can disconnect from the bustling energy of Manila and reconnect with each other, nature, and themselves.”

Uniquely designed with nature as the highlight–that’s what makes this house so memorable.Perhaps most telling is the emotion behind Raffi's Way—a home built as a dream family retreat. For the Zuluetas, the villa is not just a property, but a living testament to family memories, a space that continuously uplifts and nourishes the soul. "It has aged beautifully," says Nino. "In my humble opinion, it's one of the most uniquely designed homes, and we are happy to share it with others."

Home Away From Home

Raffi's Way offers the perfect escape, whether you're looking to host a special occasion, enjoy a quiet weekend with loved ones, or simply indulge in the calmness of nature’s embrace. For those fortunate enough to experience it, the villa remains more than just a place to stay—it’s a part of a dream, a slice of history, and a retreat that feels like home.
