Whether you’re moving out and living alone in the metro for the first time or have been a city dweller for years, styling one’s space will always be an intimidating task. Especially for homeowners who feel at a loss whenever they think of moving things around or adding a new furniture or centerpiece, expert advice is always well appreciated.

That’s why during Our Home’s recent lifestyle exhibit called “Love, Our Home”, the brand invited Philippine School of Interior Design’s (PSID) Pojie Pambid to offer tips on home styling. Metro.Style had a chat with this design mentor for the particulars in furnishing homes as well, especially when space is limited.

What's in a peg?

Before one gets started on designing the home, putting up the overall theme must be decided. “The designer must first study the likes and dislikes of the occupant. The personality of the individual who is going to be using the space must be taken into consideration and from there, derive a suitable theme,” he begins. Pegs can be helpful for this step, whether taken from magazine cutouts or maybe some scourings from the internet!

Once the theme is set, it’s time to think about what should fill the dwelling, beginning from the essentials.

In the gallery below, find Pojie Pambid's tips:

On Furniture - Once the theme is set, it’s time to think about what should fill the dwelling, beginning from the essentials. Furniture that is considered a staple in every room should be on top of list, followed by furnishings to dress it up. “These are the soft materials like curtains, rugs, and throw pillows. These will add to the character of the furniture,” Pojie shares.@ourhome_ph

On Home Décor And Accessories - Add more depth to the design by playing with accessories, like table top accoutrements, picture frames, floral stylings, vases, knick-knacks that will introduce a very personal touch, the dean describes. And finally, finish off with lighting to create ambiance. “These may be in the form of chandeliers and pendant lights, table lamps and floor lamps, and even pin lights,” he offers.@ourhome_ph

Add Soft Furnishings For Comfort - If the dweller is particular with bedroom comfort, Pojie says that the den should be styled in a way that it provides the essentials to comfort. “Invest in very good pillows on the bed—shams, throws, and bolsters will add a plus factor aside from just putting in standard pillows. A throw rug or a throw blanket on the bed also gives it something extra. And invest also in very good lighting. Table lamps on bedside tables add ambiance and warmth in the bedroom while also providing the best source of lighting for color rendition,” he explains.@ourhome_ph

Scentscaping Is Essential To Convey The Mood - The dean also points out the importance of scents, and lists down home fragrances that fit the dwellers’ mood and needs. “Lavender is for cleansing and healing. It can bring about a relaxed atmosphere and can be used to induce rest and sleep. Vanilla is uplifting. It helps with insomnia and is very calming. Lemongrass is used to aid in eliminating fatigue and promotes sleep.' Lemongrass is also natural insect repellent. Green Tea eliminates sleepiness and increases alertness. Finally, eucalyptus can enlighten and increase concentration,” Pojie enumerates.@ourhome_ph

On Natural Light And Reflective Surfaces - And even with limited space, there’s no excuse not to have a spacious-looking home with a few design tips. Pojie begins with a play on colors—urging one to go for light and neutral hues. The designer also suggests providing ample illumination to eliminate shadows, as a well-lit home creates the illusion of a bigger space. Mirrors also help and can double as accents on walls.@marvalutich_sfrealtor

Dark Colors Recede - “Dark colors have a tendency to be receding while bright colors are advancing,” he clarifies.@oneofto25

On Condo-Perfect Furniture - For furniture, pieces that are not bulky and massive are your best bets, as well as ones that are more proportioned and fitted for your condo.@ourhome_ph

Our Home carries great options for all types of homeowners and Pojie recommends a great deal of selection from the brand. “I have a lot and it’s impossible to pick only some. When I choose furniture from Our Home, I make it a point to bring my clients so that they can be included in the design decisions and their likes are considered. With Our Home, there’s always an array of options to suit the contemporary modern clientele,” he ends.
