Life has never been normal in Green Hills, and it’s no different in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where things are about to get “off the scale.” For Maddie and Tom Wachowski, played by Tika Sumpter and James Marsden, raising a blue blur of energy like Sonic—along with his equally chaotic sidekicks Tails and Knuckles—is no ordinary parenting gig.

Imagine managing three hyperactive, super-powered kids—not your typical suburban family setup!

“Rambunctious!” Sumpter exclaims when asked to describe the Wachowskis’ home life in this franchise. Between her job as a vet and Tom’s duties as a police officer, the two juggle chaos with the kind of patience only video game parents could muster.

But just when you think they’re settling into this wacky rhythm, Team Sonic gets called away on yet another save-the-world mission, leaving Maddie and Tom in a surprising predicament: life without the noise.

Sumpter humorously admits that their new “empty nest” situation leads Maddie to bake an excessive amount of bread—a hobby born more out of existential crisis than genuine passion.

“What are my hobbies?” she laughs. “I don’t have any!” It’s a hilariously relatable moment for any parent who suddenly finds themselves with too much free time once the kids have flown the coop—whether those kids are human or happen to be speedy blue hedgehogs.

As much as the film promises the usual mix of heart, humor, and high-speed heroics, fans can expect something even bigger this time. With a globetrotting storyline that takes us far beyond Green Hills to places like Tokyo and London, the scale is unprecedented.

Sumpter teases that audiences are in for an exhilarating ride, filled with surprises at every turn. And if that weren’t enough, the villainous Robotnik—played by none other than Jim Carrey—comes with a twist: this time, we get two Carreys for the price of one, as he takes on the dual role of Robotnik and his grandfather.

“Double the evil, double the nuisance, double the trouble,” Sumpter says. Watching the comedic genius of Carrey reprimand himself on screen? That’s a cinematic moment we didn’t know we needed.

Despite all the action, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remains a family story. Whether it’s the bickering yet fiercely loyal trio of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles or the ever-supportive Maddie and Tom, the film explores themes of identity, growing up, and sticking together through thick and thin.

According to Sumpter, Sonic is growing up in this film, grappling with what it means to be independent, confident, and, yes, cool. “He’s learning to be a leader,” she shares, recalling a hilarious scene where Sonic reluctantly endures a birthday party thrown by his well-meaning foster parents. This moment feels all too familiar for Sumpter, who jokes about her daughter giving her a similar “not cool” treatment.

And, of course, no Sonic movie would be complete without a new formidable foe. Enter Shadow, a powerful character that can rival Team Sonic’s collective strength.

“Shadow is ruthless,” Sumpter explains, “and sometimes fighting for your cause gives you even more power.” With teleportation abilities and a backstory that fuels his relentless drive, Shadow promises to be a game-changing adversary for Sonic and his friends.

For Sumpter, being part of the Sonic universe has been a joyful journey, filled with heartwarming moments. Whether it’s receiving napkin-drawn letters from young fans at the airport or hearing parents praise the films for being something they can genuinely enjoy alongside their kids, she takes pride in her role as “Sonic’s Mom.”

Reflecting on her daughter’s quiet captivation during the first film, Sumpter knew they had created something special. “These movies mean so much to kids; they’re imprinted on them for life. So, that means I’m imprinted on them for life too.”

"You watch these movies in the theatre with people

and can see the audience really lean into them. Even the kids are so into

them that they go quiet. And that nearly never happens. I remember

someone telling me, ‘I took my kids to the theatre and thought I was

going to take a nap, because that's when I take my naps. But I couldn't

because I couldn’t stop watching it!’ These movies speak universally to

families because our writers put things in them for everyone. And these

movies also reflect the young audience as it grows. They speak to them

about things that are relevant to them each time."

Whether you’re a die-hard Sonic fan or just looking for a fun, family-friendly blockbuster, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 promises to deliver thrills, laughs, and heartfelt moments in spades. Buckle up—it’s going to be a wild ride!

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opens in Philippine cinemas on January 15, 2025.
