Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — Experts in nutrition and education couldn&#x27;t stress enough how important it is for pregnant women to complete their prenatal care for their children to avoid malnutrition.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/lifestyle/health-wellness/2024/7/22/marcos-jr-approves-more-cash-aid-for-indigent-mothers-1752">• Marcos Jr. approves more cash aid for indigent mothers</a> </div><p>Prenatal care includes checkups, vaccination, and eating the right food. </p><p>Ellen Ruth Abella, OIC-Nutrition Policy and Planning Division of the National Nutrition Council (NNC), explained Friday that malnutrition involves undernutrition with stunting and wasting, micronutrient deficiencies or hidden hunger, and overnutrition with overweight and obesity. </p><p>These conditions have a number of effects on one&#x27;s body and mind.</p><p> &quot;Ang isang bata... habang siya ay pinagbubuntis at hindi naibigay ang proper nutrition sa kanya, ang isang buntis na nanay ay pwedeng manganak ng isang low birth weight na baby. Ang low birth weight na baby ay mas malaki ang risk na maging stunted siya pag hindi siya nabigyan ng kaukulang intervention. Kapag hindi po tayo nag-exclusive breastfeeding or naibigay ang breastmilk sa tamang oras, tamang panahon at tamang duration or tagal,&quot; Abella told reporters at the sidelines of an &quot;E-skwela&quot; forum on nutrition and education.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/12/12/23/malnutrition-still-prevalent-in-ph-study">• Malnutrition still prevalent in PH: study</a></div><p> &quot;Meron din po iyang epekto sa ating bata kapag hindi po natin naibigay or na-introduce ang tamang complementary feeding or iyong mga pasunod after mag-six months at hindi siya enough pa na nutrient, diyan po nag-uumpisa iyong stunting po natin,&quot; she added.</p><p> Abella called on pregnant women to visit health centers and avail of free services, especially in the first 1,000 days of life, which covers pregnancy until a child&#x27;s second birthday. </p><p>If not, the consequences may be continually experienced until a child matures into an adult, especially if brain development is affected.</p><p> &quot;Kapag hindi properly developed ang ating brain meron siyang magiging problema pagdating sa learning outcomes po natin. Mahihirapan siyang mag-cope pagdating sa mga lessons, mahihirapan siya na mag-concentrate for problem solving skills. At kapag nag-persist po ito at hindi din na nagbigay ng interventions habang siya ay nasa school meron siyang effect sa ating participation. Pwedeng mag-drop out ang isang bata, pwede siyang maging repeater,&quot; Abella said.</p><p> If malnutrition is not addressed, it would have an impact on their productivity as future workers, she added.</p><p> &quot;Pwedeng mahirapan siyang kumuha, maghanap ng trabaho or ang kanyang magiging trabaho ay hindi well compensated, so meron syang income loss. At kapag ang ating mga mga tao are hindi productive, meron din siyang epekto sa economic productivity ng society. So ibig sabihin ang isang malnourished na individual ay hindi fully nakakapag-contribute sa productivity at development din ng society or sabihin na nating sa community kung saan siya gumagalaw,&quot; she added.</p><div> <strong>NUTRITION AND EDUCATION</strong></div><p> Thus, getting the right energy will fuel a child to perform well in school, said Conchitina Enrile, Technical Specialist of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2).</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/video/news/07/25/23/ph-should-declare-malnutrition-as-national-emergency-expert">• PH should declare malnutrition as national emergency: expert</a> </div><p>&quot;Malaki iyong relation ng nutrisyon sa education, kasi iyong nutrition, nakukuha nating nutrients and energy mula sa pagkain na kinakain natin, iyon iyong nagfu-fuel sa&#x27;tin para mag-perform sa school,&quot; she told reporters. </p><p>&quot;So pag wala na iyong proper nutrition lalo na sa matagal na panahon at nung first 1,000 days, magkakaroon ng chronic undernutrition... Parang naabuso iyong katawan at hindi nagkakaroon ng proper nutrition,&quot; she added.</p><p> Enrile encouraged teachers to continue helping their students who are experiencing--or have the tendency to become--malnourished by always looking out for them, talking to them, and to their parents.</p><p> She is also optimistic that schools can produce healthy food like vegetables.</p><p> &quot;Challenge talaga iyong gulayan sa paaralan sa mga urban setting na wala namang buildable space. So, siguro, makakatulong na i-explore talaga iyong ibang mga avenues. Like iyong mga hydroponics, iyong mga vertical gardens, or iyong mga innovative solutions na iyong mga recycled na mga bottles na ginagawang mga paso,&quot; Enrile said.</p><p> Therese Mangussad, a youth leader from the Bukluran University of the Philippines System called on her fellow youths to step up and use the power of social media to spread the right information. </p><p>&quot;Dito na papasok na ma-urge natin iyong policy makers, as well as local government to take action and collaborate with us in making changes in our policies and laws in the country,&quot; she said.</p><div> <strong>NUTRITION AND SOCIETY</strong></div><p> But why is the importance of nutrition taking a while to be realized by policy makers?</p><p> For Abella, it comes with the nature of nutrition, as something that cannot be seen immediately.</p><p> &quot;Sa ngayon kasi, ang nutrisyon hindi siya nakikita na result of development.... Ang magiging impact niya ay makikita mo lamang &#x27;pag tumanda na iyong isang bata,&quot; she explained.</p><p> &quot;Hindi mo kaagad makikita iyong returns sa investment mo after five years. So parang lifelong iyong result of investment for nutrition.
