MANILA — The construction of a 13-story hemodialysis center at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) compound in Quezon City began on Wednesday, as the NKTI observed a nearly 42 percent annual increase in the number of patients on dialysis.

NKTI Executive Director Dr. Rosemarie Liquete said chronic kidney disease is now the 7th cause of mortality in the Philippines.

"We have existing dialysis patients, new and old, of 100,000. And most of our patients, 98 percent of them are on hemodialysis. Thus the demand for this building,” she said in a speech during the groundbreaking ceremony for the hemodialysis building.

The new facility will house and operate 200 state-of-the-art hemodialysis machines that will cater to indigent and private patients.

It will also have the capacity to accommodate renal patients under hemodialysis with complex medical conditions and those requiring emergency care.

The infrastructure is proposed to become a one-stop shop healthcare facility with its own Malasakit Center, an Admission and Business Area, Operating Room, Laboratory, Pharmacy and commercial spaces.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who led the groundbreaking ceremony, said the government is allocating P2.3 billion to fund the construction of the hemodialysis center, which he expects to be completed within the term of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.

“Ito ang magiging pinakamalaking hemodialysis treatment center sa buong Pilipinas. Tuloy-tuloy po ang itong mga programa ng specialty health centers. So, kahapon, may cancer center naman dyan sa Ospital ng Manila... At lahat ito, matatapos sa termino ng ating mahal na Presidente,” he told the media.

To prevent kidney disease, the NKTI advises the public to have a healthy diet, maintain ideal body weight, exercise regularly, avoid smoking and excessive salt, and drink plenty of water. It noted that hypertension and diabetes should be controlled.

“’Pag dumating na tayo sa 50 to 70 age and especially now with our lifestyle na marami ang may diabetes and hypertension. ‘Pag meron kang diabetes, in 15-20 years na ikaw ay diabetic, lalo na pag hindi controlled, mapupunta ka talaga sa renal failure,” Liquete said.
“’Pag dumating na tayo sa 50 to 70 age and especially now with our lifestyle na marami ang may diabetes and hypertension. ‘Pag meron kang diabetes, in 15-20 years na ikaw ay diabetic, lalo na pag hindi controlled, mapupunta ka talaga sa renal failure,” Liquete said.
“Lahat in moderation… Ang importante is preventive and also mag-regular check-up mula pa lamang sa school children,” she added.
