9 Works Theatrical's "Liwanag sa Dilim," which closed last May 4 with Khalil Ramos, Alexa Ilacad, and Vien King leading the cast, had a surprise at curtain call when its sister company, The Sandbox Collective, revealed its upcoming production.

"Side Show" is a musical by Bill Russell (book and lyrics) and Henry Krieger (music) aboutr Violet and Daisy Hilton, conjoined twins who became famous stage performers in the 1930s.

Following the company's critically acclaimed productions of "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Next to Normal," the theater company led by Toff De Venecia continues its 2025 season with Tanya Manalang and Molly Langley as Violet and Krystal Kane and Marynor Madamesila as Daisy, this July.

In real life, the conjoined twins died together in their home in Charlotte, North Carolina, on January 4, 1969, due to complications from the Hong Kong flu. Daisy passed away first, and Violet died a few days later, reportedly hugging her sister.

Its original production, which opened on Broadway on October 16, 1997, featured Alice Ripley as Violet and Emily Skinner as Daisy.

In Manila, it was last staged by the now-defunct Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group in 2018.

According to Manalang, her character Violet is quiet and embodies courage. She is steadfast, strong, and determined to build a life of her own (while holding space for those she loves).

Langley sees a lot of herself in Violet, the longing for stability and to one day have a family, which is very important to her. She admits that she's an outgoing person, but can also be very shy (at first) like Violet.

On the other hand, Kane describes Daisy as more of a headstrong and outspoken one compared to Violet, "She knows what she wants in life (fame, glamour, and stardom) and if there’s a way to get there, she’ll take it. She’s bold and determined and although she can be a bit stubborn sometimes (which I’m sure Violet would agree with), she knows her worth. That’s what I admire most about her. She’ll stand her ground when need be especially when it comes to her sister proving that even though she sometimes dreams of a life of independence, it’ll never outweigh her love for Violet," she said,

Tim Pavino, who alternates with Vien King as Buddy Foster, talks about how he landed his role. "I did audition for 'Side Show' the moment I heard of the opportunity! I just moved back to Manila this year so this will be my return to the Philippine theater scene in four years. This musical is special to me, having done the role of Dog Boy/Houdini in 2018 (with Atlantis), I wondered what it would be like to do this musical again. I’m honored to be joining The Sandbox Collective production, and this time as Buddy," he said.

CJ Navato, fresh from his "Liwanag sa Dilim" stint, is portraying Terry Connor, alternating with Reb Atadero. It's his fifth production since he did "One More Chance," "Charot," and "Kislap at Fuego" for PETA. "I am just so excited to work with them all. I feel very privileged to work with such talented and renowned theater actors. It’s a new company, a new production, and new personalities, I can’t wait to see what we will all bring to the table," he said.

Comedian, host, and TV and film actor Jon Santos as The Boss, while Marvin Ong and Joshua Cabiladas alternate in the role of Jake.

The ensemble is composed of Arion Sanchez, Chan Rabutazo, Fay Castro, Daniel Wesley, Ian Hermogenes, Mikee Baskiñas, Pamela Imperial, Pappel, Raflesia Bravo, Red Nuestro, Reine Paisley, and Rhap Salazar.

"Side Show" will be directed by The Sandbox Collective’s managing artistic director Toff de Venecia, with Ejay Yatco as musical director. Rounding out the artistic team are Mark Dalacat as assistant director and set designer, Carlos Siongco as costume designer, Gabo Tolentino as lighting designer, JM Cabling as choreographer, and Colin Dancel as photographer.
