MANILA — Some vendors at Dangwa Flower Market in Manila said sales this Mother’s Day were lower compared to previous years due to its closeness to election day on May 12, Monday.

People who would normally buy at the market could have already travelled to their provinces for the polls, noted Morena Canarejo, a vendor at Dangwa for over a decade now.

Kahapon, medyo maraming tao. Pero kanina, nung ‘di pa masyado mainit, medyo marami-rami,” Canarejo said on Sunday morning.

Joseph Abayon, a florist, was ready for some flowers to be left over from the day due to the low turnout. Abayon said this was unlike the situation in 2024 when flowers easily sold out.

Despite the lower demand, buyers noticed Mother’s Day prices of some flowers were double or even triple what they were on normal days.

“‘Pag walang occasion, mura siya talaga. Pero ‘pag may occasion, medyo nagti-triple yung presyo niya,” said Eva Estrella, a Dangwa Flower Market regular.

Estrella paid P1,500 for a flower arrangement that she said was only P500 in previous weeks.

But Canarejo said compared to Valentine’s Day, the prices of their products were lower. At her stall, 12 roses cost P800 on May 11, almost half of the Valentine’s Day price of P1,500.

Some vendors noted roses are their most popular product for Mother’s Day.

At some stalls, a dozen roses can cost around P600 to P1,000.

STORIES BEHIND MOTHER’S DAY FLOWERS

For some buyers, the vibrant blooms are not just gifts to give thanks, but tributes to remember lost loved ones.

Estrella has visited and bought from Dangwa Flower Market weekly since her grandmother’s death in October 2024.

And before celebrating Mother’s Day with her four kids for lunch, she made sure to pick up a basket of flowers for offering to her grandmother.

Hindi namin siya nakakalimutan dalhan ng bulaklak sa puntod,” Estrella said, adding her mother was often at work, which was why her grandmother mostly raised the children.

For Katrina Angcoy, another buyer at the Manila market, buying flowers is a way of showing appreciation to her mother who did not let distance sever their relationship.

Angcoy no longer lives with her mother, but the latter still finds time to visit often.

Ito ‘yung pambawi,” Angcoy said with a laugh.
