MANILA (UPDATED) — At least 1,000 students and teachers from over 60 schools nationwide attended the two-day Pinoy Media Congress (PMC) on Thursday at the University of Makati—an annual conference that brings together some of the country’s leading media experts and professionals to share their knowledge and expertise.

Among the guest speakers on the first day were TV and radio hosts Amy Perez and Winnie Cordero, and ABS-CBN News reporter Michael Delizo.

Other notable guests included ABS-CBN News Head Francis Toral, ABS-CBN Films Head Kriz Gazmen, ABS-CBN Films Head of Creative Carmi Raymundo, ABS-CBN Music and ABS-CBN Integrated Events Head Roxy Liquigan, and ABS-CBN Music’s Head of Creatives, Content, and Operations Jonathan Manalo.

Also sharing their insights were Kantar Media Philippines Managing Director Jay Bautista, Metro Group Head Christina Lopez, and Metro Magazine and Metro.Style Editor-in-Chief Geolette Esguerra.

The speakers engaged with students and educators on current media trends and issues to help future media practitioners prepare for careers in the industry.

Now on its 20th year, the annual conference is held in partnership with the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE).

“Marami sa mga itinuturo ko sa aking mga estudyante, lalo na sa media production, sa etika ng pamamahayag, sa kahalagahan ng responsableng komunikasyon, ay mga bagay na natutunan ko mismo sa mga ganitong klase ng pagtitipon,” said PACE president Mark Lester Del Mundo Chico, a professor at the University of the Philippines – Los Baños.

(Many of the things I teach my students, especially in media production, journalistic ethics, and the importance of responsible communication, are lessons I’ve learned from gatherings like this.)

In his opening remarks, ABS-CBN President Carlo Katigbak, who was also celebrating his birthday on April 24, emphasized the network’s mission to build bridges between Filipinos and their stories around the world, amid challenges and the evolving media landscape.

“Gabby’s dream was to build a multimedia conglomerate—entertaining and informing Filipinos not just on TV, but on any medium,” Katigbak said, referring to ABS-CBN Corp chairman emeritus Eugenio "Gabby" Lopez III.

“Nothing is going to stop ABS-CBN from being in the service of the Filipinos,” he added.

PMC participants will also have the opportunity to explore and learn about hosting on Day 2 with TV host-actress Melai Cantiveros, among other topics and guest speakers.

Launched in 2005, the Pinoy Media Congress is an annual initiative of ABS-CBN. It has been recognized by the Philippine Quill Awards of the International Association of Business Communicators Philippines and the Anvil Awards of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines. — With a report from Lawrence Coruno, ABS-CBN intern
