MANILA — Around 4,000 dogs and cats gathered at the Mandaluyong College of Science and Technology on Sunday morning for free spay and neuter services, marking the second anniversary of the Biyaya Foundation.

This non-profit organization has been at the forefront of promoting animal welfare and rescuing strays.

Pet owners traveled from as far as Quezon Province and Zambales to take advantage of the free services. Karen Mendoza, a pet owner from Quezon City, brought her husky, Kiwi, stating that neutering services are usually expensive and difficult to afford. She also wanted to be a responsible fur mom.

“Mahirap eh, mamaya manganak, mas marami, di ko maalagaan kasi kawawa sila eh,” she said.

Veterinary surgeon Jordan Someldan assured that the procedure is safe and typically completed within minutes. However, he emphasized that the dog or cat must be in good physical condition for the surgery to be performed.

“Healthy, walang sakit na iniinda, walang pagsusuka, walang diarrhea, and maganda ang body condition score,” he explained.

Dr. Marie Ordinaryo of the Bureau of Animal Industry highlighted that spaying or neutering pets not only makes them healthier but also plays a crucial role in controlling the spread of rabies.

“Dog population management, syempre identified na posible nagkakalat ng rabies ay aso. Ayaw natin dumami yung strays na posibleng mag-infect sa tao,” she added.

Rina Ortiz, the founder of the Biyaya Foundation, expressed her gratitude and surprise at the overwhelming response from pet owners. She outlined the numerous benefits of neutering, including preventing unwanted litters, reducing aggressive behavior, and increasing the lifespan of pets.

“Naiiwasan magkaroon ng cancer, at ibang cancers, testicular, mammary, yung infections. Also, hindi na masyado nag-aaway mga aso o pusa or naghahanap ng kapareha, and even yung habitual marking of territories by urinating naiiwasan na rin po,” she explained.

Senator Grace Poe, a key proponent of recent amendments to the Animal Welfare Act, said that these changes aim to promote responsible pet ownership and ensure adequate funding for various anti-rabies programs across the country.

“Ano ba ang responsible pet ownership? Yung pag-aalaga sa mga city pounds na kailangan talaga ay matutukan. Nalalaman natin sa ibang lugar, nung bumaha, naiwan mga aso dun. So higit sa lahat, naglagay kami ng pondo para sa local government at Department of Agriculture magkaroon ng funding para sa pagkakapon at anti-rabies,” Poe said.

Additional Facts About Neutering and Spaying:

Health Benefits: Neutering and spaying can significantly reduce the risk of certain cancers in pets, such as testicular cancer in males and ovarian or breast cancer in females.

Behavioral Improvements: Spayed and neutered pets often exhibit less aggression and are less likely to roam in search of a mate, which can reduce the likelihood of them getting lost or injured.

Population Control: Neutering and spaying are essential in controlling the pet population, preventing the birth of unwanted animals, which can lead to overcrowded shelters and increased euthanasia rates.

Rabies Prevention: By controlling the stray animal population, spaying and neutering can also help reduce the incidence of rabies, a significant public health concern.
