With 12 million registered users, DITO Telecommunity is emerging as a major player in the Philippines' fast-growing digital economy. Through DITO Business and its standalone 5G technology, the company is expanding its market reach to include small and medium enterprises (SMEs), large enterprises, and local government units (LGUs) with internet solutions tailored to their needs.

Aiming to support underserved markets thriving in the digital age, this move aligns with the company's commitment to providing affordable, world-class connectivity to Filipinos.

"Our business has evolved," said DITO Business Chief Revenue Officer Atty. Adel Tamano in an interview with Salve Duplito on ANC. "I think we are at the right point in our business where we cannot just focus on the consumers because we already have a good base. We have 12 million registered users under the SIM Registration Act. And now we can start focusing on SMEs, enterprises, and LGUs."

Focusing on SMEs reveals significant opportunities. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority's 2022 List of Establishments, out of the 1,109,684 total businesses in the country, 99.59% (1,105,143) are MSMEs, with micro enterprises constituting 90.49% (1,004,195) of total establishments, followed by small enterprises at 8.69% (96,464).

"So, if you are talking about a market to target, take a look at the micro enterprises, and take a look at the SMEs. That is a big market to get it right. And the interesting thing is that the two giants have largely overlooked them. Or in Filipino, hindi sila pinapansin," Atty. Tamano said.

"You have to go back to the reason why DITO was set-up. We were allowed by the government and the regulators to enter the market as a third telco to bring competition and innovation into the telco industry. It's a little bit cheesy, but it was for nation building," Atty. Tamano added.

As the third telco in the country, DITO Telecommunity is positioning itself as a significant force in the Philippines' digital economy. In 2023, the digital economy in the Philippines amounted to P2.05 trillion, contributing 8.4% to the country's economy. This sector, which includes online businesses, tech services, and digital platforms, grew by 7.7% from the previous year's P1.90 trillion, highlighting its role in boosting the country's overall economic performance.

5G standalone network

DITO Business takes pride in its 5G technology, the fifth generation of wireless cellular technology. 5G technology may provide higher data speeds with less delay than 4G, sometimes referred to as 4G LTE.

But DITO Business goes beyond traditional 5G with its 5G standalone network.

"Our 5G is what is known as 5G standalone. That means we do not have any legacy systems. That means our spectrum is bigger compared to the spectrum of the competitors. And also, our core is true 5G," Atty. Tamano explained.

DITO Business stands out as the sole telecom provider in the country with a nationwide 5G standalone network. Featuring end-to-end 5G network architecture, 5G Standalone unlocks the full capabilities of 5G for businesses.

In contrast, 5G non-standalone networks integrate a 5G radio access network with an existing 4G core, offering some 5G benefits, but not its full capability, according to DITO Business.

"Our core is 5G, which means that when you are doing your download and upload, there is no translation from 5G spectrum to the core because it is one and the same. We have a fully integrated system," Atty. Tamano emphasized.

Speed and network experience

DITO Business is committed to helping SMEs achieve their goals by providing reliable speed and network experience. The company's focus on fast connectivity that supports the essential tools and services that SMEs rely on.

"It is the speed and the low latency. With 4G and 3G, you will get from 10 Mbps to about 40 on a good day. With ours, you should be hitting the hundreds. In real terms, for the enterprise and SME segments, what are the critical applications, or as we call them, mission-critical applications, that people need? One of them is communications. So, these are Zoom, Teams," said Atty. Tamano.

"By providing them the tools to become adept in the digital economy, their businesses grow, their businesses become more efficient, and we will grow with them." Atty. Tamano added.

DITO Business is also rolling its new wireless networking technology designed for enterprise use. Called the Wi-Five, this unit is capable of providing connectivity to a minimum of five devices, and may easily accommodate up to 30 devices. This makes it suitable for office settings where stable internet is required for multiple users.

For those who are always on the go and need constant internet access while traveling, there is also a portable version called Wi-Five to Go.

Both Wi-Five and Wi-Five to Go are supported by the company's 5G standalone network.

Cybersecurity

Atty. Tamano emphasized DITO Business's commitment to cybersecurity, noting their investment in advanced measures. "We have invested billions of pesos for our cybersecurity technology. We use Fortinet, which you could say is one of the top tier security providers. And in fact, this March, we have just passed our cybersecurity audit which was done by the NTC, the DICT, and the National Security Council," he shared.

Customer service

DITO Business is also focusing on earning trust by offering good service and support. They want people to know that they can rely on them.

"This year, it is just about credibility building. Put in other terms, we have built a strong service assurance team. This is the year when we go out to our customers and show them that first, our service is good. For me, that is number one, no question. The aftersales to take care of you if there is a problem, that is the thing that we are building this year, and hopefully, through that, we will get a little bit of market share. And then next year, a little bit more, and then hopefully by the third or fourth year, we will get what we call our rightful share, which is maybe 30% of the enterprise market," Atty. Tamano said.

Looking ahead, DITO Business aims for financial stability by 2026, intending to expand its network and bring advanced 5G standalone technology to more businesses and locations. "If companies or industrial estates need 5G technology for their smart factories, smart cities, or smart traffic, we can provide that and work with them to build a network for them.  So, very exciting times ahead," Atty. Tamano concluded.
