MANILA -- Actress and former Binibining Pilipinas Universe 1982 Maria Isabel Lopez was a no-show at the recently concluded 60th Binibining Pilipinas coronation night.

In some of her past interviews, Lopez had been very vocal about her rift with the longest-running pageant in the country. She would rant on TV why she wasn’t invited during the golden anniversary celebration.

But ABS-CBN News learned that this year, Lopez was invited by Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI). It was just unfortunate that the former beauty queen is currently in the US.

According to Lopez, “I have a prior commitment here in California. I danced the Banga at a fundraiser. Also my son is arriving here in the US.”

She also admitted that she was surprised when she received the invitation.

“I feel very honored that after ghosting me for decades, they finally invited me to grace the 60th year. When they called me, I was shocked and I told them SMA (Stella Marquez Araneta) will not want my presence there. But Liliana (Soriano) of BPCI told me to forget the past. Let bygones be bygones,” she said.

For the sake of accuracy and context, we asked Isabel what really happened between her and the pageant in the past. “In an incident decades ago, she (SMA) refused to give me tickets. Gloria Diaz gave me and when she found out I was there, inutusan nya ang security na paalisin ako sa upuan ko. But I stood my ground and was able to watch the pageant,” she recalled.

She continued: “Tinarayan pa ako ng late Bb. Myrna Borromeo. 'IKaw naman kasi - you have to wait to be invited!' Since then, I never attended the coronation nights.”

But her gratitude towards BPCI never faltered. Lopez said Binibining Pilipinas jumpstarted her career in showbiz, and the invitation to the diamond anniversary ended the rift.

“It’s an honor to be part of BPCI because of its track record. I owe it to them na malayo ang narating ko as a beauty queen actress kasi kahit naging sexy star ako, the crown on my head is always there. Iba kasi pag me title,” Lopez said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate BPCI on its 60 year and for making me a part of it.”
