MANILA -- Gian Magdangal, now 42, is playing the role of Larry Murphy in the Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Award-winning musical "Dear Evan Hansen" by Singapore's Pangdemonium, opening at the Victoria Theatre, on October 11 this year. The musical features the well-loved music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

His character is a representative of the dad that Evan (the lead character) always wished for -- strong, confident, and more than anything reliable--as someone he could count on.

According to Magdangal, he got invited to audition for the role in March after he was recommended by a good friend in Kuala Lumpur and one of his theatre mentors here in Manila.

"I was asked to do some acting sides and a video of one of the songs from the musical all sent online," he said.

"I was informed via email by the producer, that I got the part."

Perfect for the role?

Being a father in real life made him understand his character more. Now in his 40s and with a 16-year-old son (close to the character age of Evan Hansen in the musical), he is glad to play another kind of father role -- the often tense and taciturn.

Apart from the songs "Requiem," "Disappear," and "To Break in a Glove," he admits his favorite song in the musical is "Waving Through A Window."

"I first fell in love with the song during the pandemic," he said.

His other favorite is "You Will Be Found."

"I’m [really] looking forward to singing 'To Break in a Glove' as my character, Larry Murphy. It’s a song that has so many layers that’s why it’s also such a big challenge for me," he said.

His most recent productions were Repertory Philippines’ "Carousel" and Full House Theatre's "Ang Huling El Bimbo." He's about to close his latest show "I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change" (also by Repertory Philippines) this weekend.

After the Singapore production, other projects are already in the pipeline for 2025. Although he can't reveal anything specific for now, but one thing's for sure -- it will be exciting for the local theatregoers.

He will also be continuing a series of concerts for "The Greatest Duets" with his singing partner, award-winning soprano Lara Maigue.
