Ad agency Gigil issued a public apology on Tuesday following its controversial "Gil Tulog" street signs.

The marketing campaign changed the name of Gil Puyat Avenue in Makati to Gil Tulog Avenue -- a play on the Filipino words "puyat" (sleep-deprived) and "tulog" (sleep).

This prompted Victor Puyat, son of the late Senator Gil Puyat, to file a complaint with the Ad Standards Council.

In a statement posted on its social media pages, Gigil acknowledged the "issues" caused by their recent campaign.

The agency added that it has reached out to members of the Puyat family, and promised to "put more stringent measures to ensure this does not happen again."

"Even as all the necessary permits and clearances were secured, our approach had resonated differently and so the campaign was immediately discontinued," Gigil said.

"Understanding the distress the project caused, we have personally reached out to members of the Puyat family to convey our regrets and express our respect for former Senate President Gil Puyat's legacy," it added.
